Liverpool fan says he would follow Virgil van Dijk if he left Liverpool and even cheer if he scored AGAINST Reds

And Van den Berg, who joined the Reds in an initial £1.3million deal from PEC Zwolle in June, could play a part if Liverpool are hit with injuries.

The defender has been playing for Liverpool Under-23s since joining and is unlikely to feature ahead of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren this season.

Van den Berg, 17, has a place in Liverpool’s Champions League squad alongside fellow young stars Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliott, but another exciting youngster, Ki-Jana Hoever, misses out.

Neil Critchley, the Liverpool Under-23s manager, has been impressed by Van den Berg’s performances so far.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “He has an assurance about his play and gives off an air of calmness at the back.
