Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the appointment of Garry Monk as their new manager.

Monk, the former Swansea, Leeds and Middlesbrough boss, has been out of work since he was sacked by Birmingham in June, and he succeeds caretaker manager Lee Bullen at Hillsborough.

Bullen has been in temporary charge of the Owls since Steve Bruce left the club to join Newcastle in July, and he guided Wednesday to four wins from seven matches.

Monk joins the club as they lie 11th in the Championship, with nine points from three games.

He returns to Hillsborough 17 years after playing 15 games for Wednesday during a loan spell from Southampton..

Former Swansea captain Monk left Birmingham in June following an alleged row with their board over the club’s transfer policy.
