Jurgen Klopp has transformed Liverpool into one of the world’s most feared teams since arriving in October 2015.
The German coach guided the Reds to a sixth Champions League triumph in June and amassed a club-record 97 points last season, which was only bettered by champions Man City (98).
Klopp’s progress with Liverpool was rewarded on Friday with a two-year contract extension, which will keep him at Anfield until 2024.
And the 52-year-old will become the longest-serving Liverpool manager of the Premier League era if he stays until his new contract runs out.
Klopp is currently on course to end the Reds’ agonising 30-year wait for a top-flight title in England, with his side unbeaten and leading second-placed Leicester by eight points after 16 games.
But, arguably more notably, Liverpool are a whopping 14 points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Man City.
Klopp has broken a host of Liverpool records in his time with the club, including most points in a season (97), most wins in a season (30), most consecutive wins (17), most games unbeaten (33, ongoing), most home games unbeaten (32, ongoing).
Liverpool Premier League records broken under Jurgen Klopp
- Most points in a season – 97
- Most wins in a season – 30
- Most consecutive wins – 17
- Most games unbeaten – 33, ongoing
- Most home games unbeaten – 32, ongoing
The last time Liverpool tasted defeat in the league was a 2-1 loss to Man City at the beginning of the year, which went on to prove costly in the title run-in.
Liverpool’s home form has played a crucial role in their rise over the past few years.
The club’s last league defeat at Anfield came in a 2-1 reverse to Crystal Palace thanks to a brace from former Reds striker Christian Benteke in April 2017.
Meanwhile, a record run of 17 consecutive league wins came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in October.
After signing his new deal, Klopp admitted he underestimated how ‘perfect’ he and the club were for each other.
Klopp said: “For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve.
“When I see the development of the club and the collaborative work that continues to take place, I feel my contribution can only grow.
“People see what happens on the pitch as a measure of our progress and although it is the best measure, it’s not the only measure. I have seen the commitment from ownership through to every aspect and function of the club you can think of.
“When the call came in autumn 2015, I felt we were perfect for each other. If anything, now I feel I underestimated that.
“It is only with a total belief that the collaboration remains totally complementary on both sides that I am able to make this commitment to 2024.”
