South Carolina football scored a big summer win over SEC East foe Tennessee on Saturday when 247Sports Freshman All-American defensive back Karon Prunty chose the Gamecocks over the Volunteers. Prunty will be transferring from Kansas to South Carolina after spending one season in Lawrence.

The 6-foot-1, 189-pound Portsmouth, Va., native was initially committed to Liberty before eventually choosing Kansas over Virginia Tech and others.

In nine starts last year, Prunty held opponents to just a 38.5 percent completion percentage when thrown against him, ranking seventh in all of college football, while not allowing a single touchdown all season. He also broke up 10 passes, tied for the most among freshmen nationally and tied for sixth among all players, regardless of experience.

Prunty, who has four years of eligibility remaining, ranks as 247Sports’ No. 7 transfer cornerback of the offseason. He visited both the Gamecocks and Volunteers in June and announced earlier this week a decision between the two would be announced over the weekend.

In Prunty the head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray have landed their fourth transfer defensive back. He joins Carlins Platel (Assumption College), David Spaulding (Georgia Southern), and Tyrese Ross (Washington State). They also added junior college players Marcellas Dial and Isaiah Norris from Georgia Military College as well as high school signee La’Dareyen Craig (Mobile, Ala./Baker)

The Carolina secondary has lost Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu to the NFL and Jammie Robinson, John Dixon, and Shilo Sanders to the transfer portal.
