Aston Villa will be without two of their key players for the remainder of the season with the Premier League club confirming injuries to Tom Heaton and Wesley.

Centre-forward Wesley, who became Villa’s record signing during the summer, and goalkeeper Heaton suffered serious knee injuries during the New Year’s Day 2-1 defeat of Burnley.

They had scans on Thursday and Villa’s worst fears have been realised, with neither player to return to the pitch before the end of the campaign.

Furthermore, Heaton is now certain to miss Euro 2020 this summer having been expected to claim a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

The double injury blow is a huge worry for Dean Smith as he attempts to keep Villa in the Premier League.

With just six wins this season Villa are only one point clear of the bottom three, and they face fellow relegation contenders Watford and Bournemouth in between tough clashes against Man City and Spurs.

Smith could utilise the now-open transfer market to bring in replacements for the injured duo, and early reports say Villa are eyeing up Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud as potential striker reinforcements.
