Barcelona face a nervous wait over the severity of the injury sustained by Lionel Messi against Villarreal on Tuesday.

It was a first start of the season for Messi, who had recovered from a calf strain, but he did not make it beyond half-time and was replaced by Ousmane Dembele.

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde said Messi picking up any has an impact on more than just his team-mates.

“It’s some discomfort in the abductor and so we didn’t want to risk it,” he said.

“When something happens to Messi, the world stops.

“Not only here at Barcelona. I don’t think it is serious. We did not want to take any risk. We will see anyway. We will see tomorrow [Wednesday].

“I cannot tell you anything now. He has been injured for a long time and we do not want to take any risks at the moment.”

Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring and Arthur Melo rifled in a wonder strike in a 2-1 win, with former Arsenal star Santi Cazorla netting a consolation, as Barcelona moved up to fourth in La Liga.

On Monday, Messi was named men’s player of the year at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan for a record sixth time.

He beat off competition from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Juventus ace Cristiano Ronaldo.
