European champions Liverpool got their first win of their 2019/20 Champions League campaign but were pushed to their absolute limit in their 4-3 triumph over a spirited Red Bull Salzburg side.
Jurgen Klopp’s men had too much for their opponents at the beginning and raced into a 3-0 lead inside 36 minutes with Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Mo Salah getting on the scoresheet.
Mane gave Liverpool the lead with a calm finish after playing a neat one-two with Roberto Firmino.
Andy Robertson started and finished a free-flowing move to make it 2-0 and Salah’s close-range finish made it look like it would be an easy night for the Premier League club.
Hwang Hee-Chan pulled one back on 39 minutes for the visitors who came roaring back after the break.
And Salzburg amazingly found themselves level on the hour with goals from Takumi Minamino and Erling Braut Haaland.
However, Salah spared Liverpool’s blushes after latching onto Firmino’s header on 69 minutes.
Chelsea were the other English side in action on Wednesday and they got their Champions League campaign off and running too with a crucial 2-1 win at Lille.
Tammy Abraham gave Frank Lampard’s men the lead but Victor Osimhen’s towering header levelled things up.
Both sides had chances in the second half but it was Willian who bagged the all-important goal with a brilliant volley into the ground which gave goalkeeper Mike Maignan no chance.
Elsewhere, a brace from Luis Suarez saw Barcelona come from behind to beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Camp Nou.
