Arsenal began their Europa League campaign with a 3-0 win against 10-man Frankfurt, while Celtic drew 1-1 in Lille.
In beating the Bundesliga side, the Gunners did what no club have managed since the 2006/07 season, as the hosts had not lost their previous 16 home games in European competition (W12 D4), since a 1-2 loss to Palermo in the UEFA Cup.
Joe Willock’s first half goal put the club in front of a vocal home support, while Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the others after Dominik Kohr was sent off for the hosts in the final 10 minutes.
The win ended a three-game winless for Arsenal, whose goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, was another star performer, denying last season’s semi-finalists.
Celtic, meanwhile, fought back from a losing position to earn a 1-1 draw with Lille, with Ryan Christie cancelling out Mbaye Niang’s earlier spot kick.
In what was a tense finish in France, substitute Vakoun Bayo was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
