The families of the Liverpool players will attend tonight’s Premier League trophy presentation at Anfield.
It looked like the champions’ nearest and dearest were going to miss out on the historic spectacle but they were granted permission at the eleventh hour.
Liverpool’s City Council’s Grounds Safety Advisory Group (GSAG) rejected a request to allow an extra 200 people inside the stadium for their final home match of the season against Chelsea.
However, The Athletic says that permission was granted on Wednesday afternoon thanks to a compromise that families and members of staff from Melwood would watch the game on TVs inside the Carlsberg Dugout in Anfield’s Main Stand before proceeding to the Kop to watch the trophy presentation.
The Premier League gave their blessing for the rules to be eased as a one-off given the exceptional circumstances, however, the GSAS could be held responsible if there were any repercussions such as a spike in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.
A great deal of work has gone into removing the seats from the Kop to make room for a podium where club captain Jordan Henderson and his team-mates will lift the trophy for the first time in Liverpool’s history.
The other three sides of Anfield will be plunged into darkness and there will be fireworks and a light show.
Henderson and manager Jurgen Klopp have called on Kopites to celebrate from within their own home but some fans turned out to give the players a heroes welcome as the club’s coach pulled into Anfield ahead of tonight’s clash.
