Frank Lampard says Chelsea got what they deserved against Brighton as they wasted several opportunities in front of goal.
The Blues drew 1-1 with Brighton as Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s spectacular overhead kicked cancelled out Cesar Azpilicueta’s opener.
Lampard was disappointed not to take all three points from the game at the Amex Stadium, but conceded his side didn’t do enough to warrant the win.
“Yeah, we should have had it won in the first half,” he told talkSPORT.
“Some opportunities in the second and we didn’t take them.
“You get what you deserve when you don’t take your chances when you are very comfortable. Particularly in the first half.
“It wasn’t so comfortable in the second half but we created chances.
“It has been the story of a lot of our season. We dominated so much possession at times and got into many good positions and you need that extra bit of quality to finish the game. 2-0 at half-time probably finishes it. We allowed them to stay in it.”
When asked if he was surprised at Chelsea’s lack of quality in front of goal, Lampard said: “I’m not surprised. Players just have to show.
“If you get opportunities as a winger and be able to cut inside and there are two, three or four times to shift it and haves shots then you have to expect to get more shots on target and get more goals than we are.
“Tiredness is a factor you have to deal with and shouldn’t be an excuse as such. Decision-making, it is definitely decision making.”
Brighton also had their own opportunities to win the game at the end and the Blues had to rely on Kepa Arrizabalaga to keep them in it.
Lampard added: “We needed Kepa at the end. He made two great saves and from a position of where we should win the game, or be comfortably in the lead, to a position where we should feel maybe thankful to Kepa that we didn’t lose it.”
Chelsea took seven points from their four Premier League games over Christmas and Lampard said it epitomised their season so far.
“A mixed bagm” he said.
“Two great results against London rivals, a loss in the middle and then today a draw. I think it shows the good and the bad side of us and shows we have a lot of work to do.”
