Look, this is all really weird, and I’m not sure we’re in a position yet to make sense of it.
Offense is down, and a lot of games have been ragged. High-scoring guards, in particular, are adjusting without the trash fouls they used to rely on to get them through a bad night. Meanwhile, nobody in the entire league can make a 3-pointer except Seth Curry (OK), Carmelo Anthony (ummm … sure, I guess) and Ricky Rubio (wait, what?).
As much as we all want to jump to conclusions, I’m afraid the noise is still far stronger than the signal right now.
So, when should we panic about the Lakers and Bucks? Probably not yet.
And when should we start celebrating the Cavs and Wizards? Probably not now.
Look, I want to overreact to the first three weeks of the season just as badly as you do. Actually, more: These columns aren’t gonna write themselves. But history offers us too strong a lesson that perhaps we should hold our fire before booking hotel rooms for a Cavs-Wizards conference finals or condemning the Lakers and Bucks to the lottery.
It is still waaaaaay early, and there is still soooooo much basketball to be played. If you’re a Lakers or Bucks fan, I understand why you might be concerned, but I wouldn’t write off this season just yet.
