Sam Allardyce has urged Liverpool to take Frank Lampard’s warning not to get ‘too arrogant’ on board after they finally lifted the Premier League trophy on Wednesday night.
Things got heated on the sidelines during the Reds’ thrilling 5-3 win over the Chelsea, with Blues manager Lampard involved in a clash with Jurgen Klopp and his bench at Anfield.
The two managers appeared to argue over Matteo Kovacic’s challenge on Sadio Mane, which led to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s brilliant free-kick to make it 2-0 to the champions.
However, after the match Lampard insisted he had no issue with Klopp, praising the boss and the Liverpool team for their success this season, with video footage showing that he actually appeared to be annoyed at the behaviour of Reds coach Pep Lijnders.
In a video clip of the encounter, Lampard is seen hitting out at Lijnders from his technical area and yelling ‘f**k off’ repeatedly towards the Liverpool bench, with Klopp telling the Chelsea manager to ‘calm down’.
Speaking to the press, Lampard admitted he was unimpressed by the behaviour on show and warned the Reds against becoming ‘too arrogant’.
He told Sky Sports: “I’ve not got a problem with Jurgen Klopp, the way he’s managed this team has been fantastic and fair play to Liverpool, they’ve won the league.
“But also, don’t get too arrogant with it. That was my point, but it’s done. In match play, you can get emotional and that was it.”
Afterwards, Lampard was seen congratulating Liverpool’s players off the pitch, embracing Sadio Mane in the tunnel, to show there were no lingering ill feelings.
And Allardyce believes the Chelsea boss was well within his right to call out Liverpool if there was something he didn’t like, saying the champions would be wise to heed the former midfielder’s warning.
Big Sam, who was no stranger to having a pop at his rivals throughout his career, told the talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think Frank has been a lot better than I was, as a young manager I found myself a few times in front of the disciplinary committee.
“But if anybody wants to say ‘don’t get too arrogant about it’, it’s Frank isn’t it.
“If it’s anybody else, they’ve not done it, but Frank’s done it all.
“So if Frank’s giving them a bit of a tip, then he’s seen something he didn’t like, something he thinks is a little bit arrogant, and he’s the one man who can mention it.
“And if it is the bench at Liverpool they should take notice of it, because Frank has done the lot.”
