Tottenham have appealed the red card shown to Heung-min Son during Sunday’s defeat by Chelsea, Jose Mourinho has confirmed.
Mourinho was critical of the decision immediately after the match, suggesting sarcastically Rudiger must have broken his ribs because it was a ‘really violent situation’.
“In some countries like mine for example with our culture we used to say ‘clever player’,” said Mourinho. “But in this country, and one of the reasons why I fell in love with this country in 2004, is because we don’t call them clever. We call them other things, that I refuse to call him.
“For me it is not a red card.”
Mourinho remained adamant in his view during a press conference a day later, revealing Spurs have appealed the red card shown to Son.
“The situation with Son, I think Mr Tierney [VAR official] got it wrong,” said Mourinho on Monday,
The Portuguese former Chelsea coach also discussed the alleged abuse aimed at Rudiger, making clear that the actions of one Tottenham supporter should not cast a negative light on the club’s entire fanbase.
“My message is that it’s not Tottenham fans,” added Mourinho. “One Tottenham fan is not Tottenham fans.
“Tottenham fans since I’ve been here have been phenomenal, supporting the team, respecting opponents. Incredible behaviour.

“We went to Wolves and it looked like an invasion of Tottenham fans at Molineux. I go in my car to matches, busy street, no problems at all. Great discipline, great behaviour.
“If I have to say something it’s to the Tottenham supporters to keep doing what they’ve been doing with the team.”
Mourinho also discussed other topics during his press conference, and you can read the best bits, below…
On chants from Chelsea fans
“Yesterday in the game I was aware that for a few minutes there was a nice song for me that I remember. It was a little bit far but I remember some song with my name involved that nobody speaks about. I think it was not a nice song and nobody speaks about it.”
On Gazzaniga conceding penalty
“I was surprised [he didn’t use his hands]. But that’s football.
“It’s an easy one. I spoke with him to try to understand and even himself, he was not in control of his action and he made a mistake. But during matches players make mistakes, referees make mistakes and coaches make mistakes. No problem.”
On losing Son to suspension
“It would be a big loss. We don’t have a big squad. We don’t have lots of players.
“This moment is a moment where it is normal to think about rotations and very difficult situations for players to play every game.
“We don’t have [Erik] Lamela and it’s a big loss for us.
“But if that happens then we have to try to cope with it and to fight against injustice. But the way to fight against injustice is to give our best and the boys that are going to play are going to try and get results in it.”
