But Milner was unable to continue after picking up a knock early on, clutched his hamstring as he walked off the Anfield turf.

The Reds are now worrying short in defence, with Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Clyne all sidelined.

Nathaniel Clyne, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita are also out for the Reds.

Milner was replaced by a third debutant 19-year-old Yasser Larouci, who was last involved with the first team during pre-season.

Klopp now has just one senior left-back in the squad, with youngsters Larouci and Adam Lewis the only other options in that position.

The Reds boss is reportedly casting his eye over Vitesse Arnhem star Max Clark – a former team-mate of Robertson’s at Hull.

Takumi Minamino, a £7.25million signing from Red Bull Salzburg, made his first start for the club against the Toffees.
