Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson records assist against Man City and jokes with Trent Alexander-Arnold

There is a serious case to claim that Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are two of the best full-backs in Europe.

The Liverpool duo have continued up their superb form from last season into this campaign, with the Scot registering his fourth assist of the season in Liverpool’s crucial 3-1 victory over title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Robertson, whose inch-perfect cross was headed home by Mohamed Salah to put the Reds 2-0 up, was quick to remind his team-mate he has more assists so far.

The left-back posted a GIF of himself smiling in the match, with the caption: “Realising you have more assists than @trentaa98”.

Alexander-Arnold, the England right-back, recorded 12 assists in the Premier League last season –  a record for a Premier League defender – and one more than Robertson.

And he didn’t hesitate to remind Robertson there is a long season ahead, replying: “Come back in May”.

Both defenders have been known to share a healthy rivalry on the pitch.

In the Champions League earlier this season, Alexander-Arnold set up Robertson’s goal in the 4-3 victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

And after the match, he tweeted: “Robbo can’t get an assist if he’s scoring #CleverTrent”.

Jurgen Klopp’s men ran out deserved winners in the match on Sunday, but the encounter wasn’t without controversy.

Pep Guardiola and his City players were convinced they had been wrongly denied two penalties for handball, with Alexander-Arnold appearing to handle the ball inside the area in both halves.

But City now sit eight points behind Liverpool, who remain unbeaten this season.
