Manchester City cannot defend their Premier League crown and make it three league titles in a row without Aymeric Laporte, believes Jason Cundy.
The talkSPORT host claims Pep Guardiola’s side have ‘problems’ and Liverpool’s stronger defence will see the trophy go to Anfield this season.
City may be without top centre-back Laporte for SIX MONTHS after he had surgery on a serious knee injury he suffered during the 4-0 victory over Brighton before the international break.
The Frenchman’s absence was blindingly obvious in their first Premier League clash without their lynchpin, as City suffered a extraordinary 3-2 defeat to Norwich at Carrow Road.
That loss allowed Liverpool to extend their lead to five points at the top of the Premier League, with the Reds winning each of their opening five matches.
And Cundy believes things are so bad for City at the back without Laporte that even Liverpool’s third choice centre-back would walk into their team.
“Without Laporte, Manchester City can’t win the title,” the former Chelsea defender said on Monday night’s Sport Bar.
“They’ve lost Vincent Kompany and without him Laporte is their best defender, and he’s out for a long time.
“City have got some problems and Liverpool are going to win the title this year.
“Liverpool are a better team defensively.
“They have better players, their centre-half pairing are better and even the back up is better than what Manchester City have.
“Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s third choice centre-back, he can’t get in right now, but he is better than the defenders Man City have fit right now.”
