Kansas Citians have long credited Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his love of Whataburger for the Texas burger joint’s expansion into the Kansas City market. Now with the announcement of a new franchise expanding the restaurant’s offerings in Kansas City, Mahomes’ involvement in several of Whataburger’s new Kansas City locations is on paper. Whataburger initially announced plans to open four corporately-owned restaurants in the KC region earlier this year: Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs and Independence in Missouri, plus Overland Park, Kansas. On Tuesday, Whataburger announced an even larger expansion plan that includes the Kansas City area, and the MVP quarterback.Through franchise group KMO Burger, Whataburger will open 30 more stores from Wichita, Kansas, to St. Joseph, Missouri — with many of those stores concentrated in Kansas City. Whataburger initially announced plans to open four corporately-owned restaurants in the KC region earlier this year: Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs and Independence in Missouri, plus Overland Park, Kansas.
