Paul Pogba returned to the Manchester United starting line-up against Rochdale and youngster Axel Tuanzebe was named captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pogba returned after 25 days out with an ankle issue as the United boss made nine changes to the side defeated at West Ham, including 17-year-old Mason Greenwood returning after illness.

Academy graduate Tuanzebe, 21, was named skipper for the match against his hometown club.

Rochdale caused Manchester United problems all evening but it was the Red Devils who took the lead.

Mason Greenwood scored after 68 minutes to make it 1-0 at Old Trafford.

The visitors got the equaliser through Luke Matheson in the 76th minute to take it to penalties as they had to withstand a lot of pressure towards the end.

United went through on penalties after scoring all five of their penalties with Daniel James scoring the winner.
