Merseyside Police say no golf clubs have been found on Napoli fans ahead of the Italian side’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.

The fans appeared to be holding poles and some Twitter users claimed they were armed with golf clubs.

However, Merseyside Police have issued a statement saying that while they have confiscated a number of flag poles, no golf clubs have been found.

A statement read: “Merseyside Police is aware of social media posts saying Napoli fans are armed with golf clubs in the city centre.

“Officers have responded and confiscated a number of flags attached to flag poles. No golf clubs have been found.”

Liverpool will be looking for revenge against Napoli on matchday five after suffering a 2-0 defeat in Naples in September.

The Champions League holders will qualify for the knockout stages with a win over the Serie A club at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men could even lose to Napoli and still progress if Red Bull Salzburg fail to beat basement boys Genk.
