It’s official: former New York Giants center Weston Richburg is retiring after seven seasons in the NFL.

Word of Richburg’s retirement first surfaced in March. On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news, according to Pro Football Talk.

“Yeah, Weston is going to retire,” Shanahan said. “I don’t know how that officially works, but that’s the word that I’ve been told.”

The Giants selected the 29-year-old Richburg in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in New York, playing in 51 games (and starting 50).The only blemish on his Giants career came in 2017, which ended with him on the injured list after he suffered a concussion.

In March of 2018, Richburg signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the 49ers. According to Pro Football Talk, “Richburg missed all of last season after tearing a patellar tendon in December of 2019. He also had a shoulder injury and underwent hip surgery not long ago. … The 49ers restructured Richburg’s contract this offseason, clearing $6.875 million in salary cap space for 2021.”

The 49ers were prepared for Richburg’s departure, signing former Atlanta Falcons center Alex Mack in March to a three-year, $14.85 million contract.
