Penn State welcomed media members into a couple practice periods late afternoon Saturday for the first time since 2019. Thick cloud coverage provided some relief from the heat for Practice 2 of Nittany Lions preseason camp.

Hours after speaking with Penn State players and coaches at Beaver Stadium, we were back at PSU’s outdoor practice facility, which has undergone some upgrades since last visit. This was an opportunity to track physical development across the field, gauge the competitive environment, and listen to several assistant coaches who’ve been hired since we’ve been permitted to attend practice.

The session lasted more than 20 minutes, and gave us a chance to track linemen on both sides of the ball, some one-on-one passing drills, and special teams work. Penn State opened its preseason camp on Friday, and the program is now exactly four weeks away from Week 1 kickoff at Wisconsin.

“We’re bigger, stronger and faster than we’ve ever been,” Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin said on Saturday. “We’re part of the argument pretty much in every category or metric, however you want to put it. I like where we’re at with the first day of practice yesterday.”
