Odion Ighalo is in contention to start in the Manchester derby after scoring a brace in United’s FA Cup win over Derby on Thursday.

The on-loan striker has now scored three goals in two starts for the Red Devils and took his chances in the 3-0 win to see his side reach the quarter-final of the cup.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted it would be hard to keep Ighalo out of the side with his current form and was happy to be in the next round of the competition.

He told talkSPORT: “That’s the only thing that matters in the cup but also the way we went about the game at times. The way we played some excellent football. Kept them at bay. Two nice goals from Odion (Ighalo) and Sergio (Romero) again keeps a clean sheet.

“Strikers when they score are hard to keep out and he is in consideration for Sunday definitely. We’ve looked at the City game but we had to wait for tonight to see who came through unscathed.”

Wayne Rooney did not come back to haunt his old side but Solskjaer was full of praise for the ex-Man United forward.

He said: “What a save by Sergio and what a free-kick and Wazza (Wayne Rooney) is a fan favourite. He’s had such a career at Man United.

“I was lucky enough and privileged enough to play with him and see him close up. He’s still a top, top player and has loads of quality there and they have done fantastic signing him.”

Solskjaer was not happy with his side playing on Thursday against Derby when Man City, who they play on Sunday, had their fifth round tie a day earlier.

He added: “I’d rather had it last night though like they had against Sheffield Wednesday. Those 24 hours are important for them to recover but we will make the most of it. We will recover well and do the best we can.

“It’s another away tie. Away from home is difficult against anyone, Norwich especially. They have got their style of play and it’s hard to play against.

“We really need to be at our best, which we have been this season, we need to play well but we are ready for it.”
