Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been left out of Arsenal’s 18-man squad to face Southampton due to a “disciplinary breach”.

The 32-year-old, who is Arsenal’s club captain, was a surprise absentee from the side as Alexandre Lacazette was chosen to lead the line.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta then confirmed the reason behind Aubameyang’s absence when speaking before kick-off.

He said: “Unfortunately, (Aubameyang has been left out) due to a disciplinary breach. I think we’ve been very consistent with no negotiables as a team that we have set ourselves as a club, so he’s not involved today.

“Certainly, it’s not an easy situation, a situation that we want our club captain to be in.”

This is not the first time Aubameyang has been left out of a squad for disciplinary reasons. Back in March, he was left out of the side that beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 for being late.

The Gabon international has endured a testing season for Arsenal, scoring just four times in 14 Premier League appearances. He was dropped for Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Everton, only playing five minutes as a late substitute.
