Derby forward Tom Lawrence has been selected by Wales for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Slovakia and Croatia despite being charged with drink-driving last month.
Lawrence, along with Rams team-mate Mason Bennett, was involved in a car crash during September which resulted in a serious injury to club captain Richard Keogh that has sidelined him for 15 months.
Bennett and Lawrence were hit with drink-driving charges after the incident, and reports suggested they were facing the sack from the Championship club.
Nonetheless, the pair both played for Derby in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Barnsley, though they received a frosty reception from the club’s support and were booed during the match.
Phillip Cocu, the Derby manager, said after the match that the players are still not off the hook.
“In the end the players have to have the possibility to give something back to the club and the fans on the pitch,” said Cocu.
“That’s the only podium they have to give a response and it still doesn’t change the fact of what we said as a club. That will definitely happen, so they are not off the hook.
“But also they are part of our team and the club and we have to give them the possibility to give a good response.
“They are affected by it very much.
“I spoke the last few days a lot with the players and they were eager to go and play.”
Despite his recent infraction, Lawrence has been called up to the Wales squad for their upcoming qualifiers against Slovakia and Croatia.
