Christian Eriksen is resigned to staying at Tottenham at least until January as his dream move to Spain has not materialised this summer.
The Danish midfielder has reportedly been offered a bumper new contract to commit his long-term future to the north London club, having entered the final year of his current deal.
But it is claimed he will not even consider the offer as he is holding out for the move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs have offered to increase Eriksen’s wages to £200,000-a-week to stay at White Hart Lane – that would make him the club’s second highest-earning star after Harry Kane.
But the playmaker has made it clear it is not about the money, having previously admitted earlier in the summer he is keen to ‘try something new’ at another club.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted following Spurs’ surprise defeat to Newcastle on Sunday that he was unsure if Eriksen had played his final game for the club.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with making late moves for the 27-year-old before the September 2 European transfer deadline, but the Spanish giants are yet to do so and have not provided any indication they will.
It means Eriksen could end up staying at Tottenham for the time being, which will be a big boost for the club in the short-term.
Eriksen started Sunday’s home defeat to Newcastle on the bench and despite registering 80 per cent possession they just could not unlock the magpies without their star playmaker. It is clear they need his quality to win games.
However, it could mean they may lose the former Ajax midfielder for a pittance in January, with reports claiming he could leave for just £30m, or indeed absolutely nothing if his exit is delayed until next summer.
