David Moyes got off to the perfect start as West Ham manager in an action packed New Year’s Day in the Premier League.
After Aston Villa beat Burnley and Brighton held Chelsea at lunchtime, there were three 3pm kick-offs and three more games at 5.30pm.
Here’s what happened in the 5.30pm games…
West Ham 4-0 Bournemouth
A perfect return for David Moyes to West Ham as they thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 with three of those coming in the first half.
Mark Noble fired West Ham in front midway through the first half with a deflected effort from just outside the 18-yard box after Felipe Anderson and Snodgrass linked up well down the right.
Sebastien Haller doubled the Hammers’ score after 25 minutes as he volleyed Ryan Fredericks’ cross home with a cool scissor-kick finish from the centre of the box.
West Ham were awarded a penalty after 33 minutes when Noble was brought down by Harry Wilson in the box after a slight touch.
The Hammers captain slotted the resulting spot-kick into the bottom-right corner as Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was sent the wrong way.
Felipe Anderson then added a fourth goal for Moyes’ side in the 66th minute.
The Hammers thought they were reduced to 10 men after 75 minutes as Aaron Cresswell was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ryan Fraser.
After a VAR check, the card was rescinded and Cresswell remained on the pitch with a yellow instead.
Man City 2-1 Everton
Another home win for Pep Guardiola’s side as they cut the gap to Liverpool ahead of their match on Thursday.
Manchester City looked like they had taken the lead after 12 minutes as Phil Foden slotted in Riyad Mahrez’s cross at the far post but the goal was ruled offside as the scores remained goalless.
Jesus fired Manchester City in front six minutes after the break as he collected the ball from Gundogan and took it inside the box before curling it into the top corner.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed wide as Everton had a good chance to equalise soon after but Jesus doubled City’s lead seven minutes later.
The Brazil striker thumped home Mahrez’s assist to finish off a great team goal at the near post, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance as he completed his brace
Richarlison halved the scoreline with less than 20 minutes remaining to pull Everton back into the game as he tapped Theo Walcott’s deflected cross home at the back post.
Norwich 1-1 Crystal Palace
Norwich are seven points off safety in the Premier League and missed out on a chance to close the gap through a late Palace goal.
Todd Cantwell put bottom side Norwich ahead after just four minutes against Palace despite an appeal for handball.
Luka Milivojevic knocked the ball back into Cantwell’s path and the midfielder fired into the bottom corner for his sixth league goal of the season.
Conor Wickham denied the Canaries all three points when he netted the equaliser for Palace five minutes from time.
Here’s what happened in the 3pm games…
Newcastle 0-3 Leicester
No Vardy, no problem for Leicester.
Despite missing the Premier League’s leading goalscorer through injury, the Foxes eased to victory at St James’ Park, with the game wrapped up by half-time.
Ayoze Perez returned to haunt his former club as he scored the opener on 36 minutes and then teed up James Maddison to score a long-range screamer three minutes later.
Newcastle had to play the final 40 minutes with ten men after Fabian Schar went off injured shortly after Steve Bruce had made his third and final sub and the hosts never threatened to mount a comeback.
Substitute Hamza Choudhury completed the rout with an excellent finish late on – his first goal in senior football.
Southampton 1-0 Tottenham
The Saints march further away from relegation danger as Danny Ings continued his impressive season to shoot down Spurs.
The striker made it 13 Premier League goals for the season when he flipped the ball over Toby Alderweireld with one foot and fired past Paulo Gazzaniga with the other on 17 minutes.
Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside late in the second half and was injured in going for the ball, while the visitors also lost Tanguy Ndombele to injury.
On a nightmare afternoon for Jose Mourinho, the Spurs boss was booked after confronting one of the Southampton coaching staff on the bench and apparently trying to read his notes.
Watford 2-1 Wolves
Watford also gave their survival hopes a huge boost as they continued their resurgence under Nigel Pearson.
Gerard Deulofeu put the Hornets ahead with a fine finish on the half hour mark and Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled the hosts’ advantage four minutes into the second half.
Pedro Neto pulled a goal back on the hour mark and Watford were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes left when Christian Kabasele was dismissed for denying Diogo Jota a goalscoring opportunity, with VAR ruling it worthy of a red card after referee Andrew Madley had initally given him a yellow.
But Watford held on to claim their third win in four matches under Pearson and edge to within a point of safety.
