With Friday night’s Yankees-White Sox game in the Bronx tied at 1-all in the top of the ninth inning, Chicago had runners on first and second with no outs and was poised to get a run across to go ahead for the first time all game. Instead, Andrew Vaughn grounded into a triple play, with Gio Urshela expertly fielding the grounder, tagging third base and going with the heads-up play around the horn — throwing to Rougned Odor at second, who then smoothly went around to Luke Voit at first to complete the feat.

The historic feat only set up more drama, as the Yankees walked off with their fourth straight win, 2-1, moments later on Gleyber Torres’ single.

It was the first triple play the Yankees turned since April 17, 2014, against the Tampa Bay Rays, and it got the reduced-capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium fired up for the final innings of the tight tilt against the American League’s best team.

The most recent team to throw a no-hitter and turn a triple play (in either order) within a span of three or fewer days was the Cardinals on Sept. 26 and 27, 1983, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Yankees’ triple play came two nights after right-hander Corey Kluber no-hit one of his former teams, the Rangers, at Globe Life Field — the Yankees’ first no-hitter since 1999.
