SOUTH BEND, Ind. – North Carolina will be without a trio of players for Wednesday night’s tip against Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion (9 p.m./ESPN2).

The school confirmed shortly before tip-off that sophomore forward Dawson Garcia, sophomore wing Kerwin Walton and junior forward Justin McKoy would not be available to play.

Garcia, who has started 12 games, suffered a concussion early in UNC’s win at Boston College on Sunday. He hit his head on the court during a skirmish for a loose ball and did not return to the game. UNC head coach Hubert Davis told reporters later that Garcia was dealing with a headache at halftime. The Marquette transfer, who is averaging 10 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, did not practice on Monday or Tuesday.

“He got hit in the head,” Davis said on his radio show on Monday night. “He was going for a loose ball and his head hit the floor and just talked about, for the remainder of the game, that he had a headache. It just continued to get worse and so he wasn’t able to play.”

Walton joins McKoy on the COVID-19 protocols list. McKoy entered protocol on Friday and did not travel with the team to Boston. Walton logged 19 minutes against the Eagles, scoring five points on 2-of-7 shooting and grabbing two rebounds.

Garcia’s absence moves Oklahoma transfer Brady Manek (12.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg) into the starting role and likely will force wing Leaky Black (4.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg) to slide down to man the four spot, where he played some against Boston College. With more minutes available on the wing, sophomore Anthony Harris (2.3 ppg) and freshmen D’Marco Dunn (1.6 ppg) and Dontrez Styles (1.1 ppg) are options to see increased playing time.
